Non-communicable diseases are known as diseases that cannot be spread from one person to another. There are four main types of non-communicable diseases, namely cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes. Non-communicable diseases arise from a combination of non-modifiable risk factors and modifiable risk factors. Risk factors that cannot be modified by an individual are age, gender, and genetics. Meanwhile, modifiable risk factors are factors that can be changed through the individual's own circumstances and social intervention (Warganegara, E. 2016). One factor that can be modified is consumption patterns such as consuming too much food high in saturated fat which can cause diabetes mellitus. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health (2020), the number of DM sufferers is 8.5% of the population aged 15 years and over or 21.3 million people. According to the Malang City Health Service (2020), Malang City has 7,534 diabetes sufferers. The highest prevalence of DM cases is 1.4% (Riskesdas East Java, 2020). Hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus has an influence on the blood vessel endothelium due to the auto-oxidation process of glucose to form free radicals which ultimately results in macro and microvascular dysfunction (Prawitasari, D. 2019). The government's effort to control diabetes is with the Chronic Disease Management Program (PROLANIS), which is a health service system with a proactive approach (Khasanah, U. 2018). The increasing number of free radicals in the body can result in cellular oxidative stress. This occurs because there is an imbalance between the number of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the body. If this continues to happen, it can trigger the emergence of degenerative diseases. One way to prevent exposure to free radicals is with antioxidant compounds. Compounds with antioxidant activity are able to donate electrons to compounds that are oxidants, including free radicals, so that their activity is inhibited (Hani and Milanda, 2016). Antioxidants are divided into two types, namely natural antioxidants and artificial antioxidants (Winarsi, 2007).
